Match Report February 23rd v Loughborough 1

One plus of the League Cup competition is that it’s a handicap format – so we didn’t have our strongest team out for this one, but the grading differences meant we got a 1 point start.

Paul Colburn had the worst of it against Sean Sheahan, and succumbed first. Tony Robinson put up a great fight against Alfonso Jimenez – but just couldn’t find a way of getting a passed pawn through, and lost on time. We were sure there must have been a win somewhere …

Dave Sandrovitch sat worse against Greg Eagleton, but Greg blundered a piece, and a draw was agreed with very little time left.

Jim Bingham had a solid material advantage, but let John Mitchell get an attack going. With only seconds left on both clocks, John missed one mate on the move – thought he saw another, but missed that he was placing his queen en prise, and resigned.

So we scored 1.5 points, giving us a draw with the handicap. An exciting night. Match report by Dave Sandrovitch.

Match Report February 3rd 2011

The first team travelled to Wigston to take on the reigning League Champions who fielded a strong team. We were outgraded on every board except board 1, where our grandmaster Mark won a fine attacking game against the current County champion Alan Byron. Boards 2, 3 and 4 however all had wild games where we were under the cosh and all succumed. Jim on board 5 turned down no less than 6 (!) draw offers before finally agreeing. So the match was lost by 3½ - 1½. Report by Mike Salisbury.

Match Report February 1st 2011

Braunstone 4 went top of the table after a hard fought 2-2 draw at home to Oadby. It was another strong performance with everyone giving a good account of themselves and 4 close games despite a team grading deficit of 110 .Wins for John and Guy secured the draw, with Steve coming very close to the draw which would have secured a team win.
