Thursday 16th December 2010 An excellent win for our third team away to Wigston 5.
Wednesday 15th December 2010 Braunstone second team travelled to Loughborough 2 for a second division match and the spoils were shared. Loughborough put out its strongest team of the season so far, so it was just as well we did the same. John Oliver's game quickly ended in defeat, following a clever rook sacrifice by his opponent. Dave had a good game against Greg Adcock, and won a piece, but with only a minute to play his last 4 moves offered a draw which Greg was grateful to accept. John Robinson played an excellent game, but unfortunately failed to spot the winning line due to lack of time, resulting in a draw. Mike got into trouble out of the opening and with less than a minute to make his last six moves somehow managed to simplify things into a drawn endgame. That left Tony in a double edged position against Terry and as both players had a couple of minutes on the clock Tony found a powerful mating attack and Terry resigned just before his flag fell. So all in all a competitive match and a fair result and a valuable point. Report by John Oliver .
Tuesday 14th December 2010 There were contrasting fortunes for the two Braunstone teams at home on Tuesday as the first team were thumped by Loughborough 1 whilst the fourth team beat Red Admiral 2 convincingly. The first team came up against a strong Loughborough side strengthened by a new board one, Ilian Mladenov from the University. He had Paul in trouble in the opening and the attack proved too strong. John went into a level endgame against Sean and a draw was soon agreed. Sherif played a combination in the middlegame but missed a Zwischenzug which cost him a piece and soon after the game. Mike dropped a piece on move 15 and then managed to get some counterplay which looked like it might be good enough to equalise but went astray in time trouble and the game was lost. Jim had a good game against Greg, won a piece for two pawns only to see it all go wrong as time problems cost him dearly. So our first defeat of the season. Report by Mike Salisbury.
The fourth team beat Red Admiral 2 by 3½ - ½. it wasa strong performance by the team given that we were out graded on the top three boards . As usual in recent years, Guy's game with Andy Carter went to the ' wire ', and Guy managed to win in a tight end game . Steve had a battling draw on board 2, whilst Vince had an encouraging win against the experienced Stan Parsons. Finally John seemed to have a fairly comfortable win against his young ' flu' bound opponent. Report by Guy Closs.
Thursday 9th December 2010 Braunstone 4 travelled to Kirby Castlers, the newest team in the league, very friendly but the venue a little chilly for a December night ! They were mostly new players for Kirby other than Ray Townsend who beat Guy after a good battle . Our team performed well to ensure 3-2 win with Toby Hoch debuting & settling in well with a comfortable win. We retired to the Castle to celebrate where the beer was reasonable but the service was dire ! Report by Guy Closs.
Tuesday 7th December 2010 Braunstone 2 entertained Wigston 3 at home and came out winners by 3½ - 1½ . Apart from the top board, where we had a significant grading advantage, the teams were fairly evenly matched. Dave secured an early draw, at which time the remaining games were more or less even.
Roy was the next to agree a draw and at that time, it was still all to play for. Later on, John was forced to agree a draw as well, but by then Tony had a promising attack. Tony duly won and shortly afterwards, Jez offered a draw to clinch the match, but was turned down.
In the end, it didn't matter as Jez had a good game and went on to win. Report by John Oliver.
