Match Report 16th March The first team travelled to Shepshed and shared the spoils in a tight match. Mike agreed a draw against Robert Henfrey after the position simplified, then Mark won with a nice king side attack. John then agreed a draw in a complex plosition with both flags about to fall and Jim lost. That left Sherif with a rook and pawn end game and with both flags about to fall a draw was agreed. Report by Mike Salisbury.
Match Report 15th March After 3 straight 3 - 2 defeats, the distinct possibility of a 4th successive defeat for our second team at home to Ashby loomed large. Fortunately, Ashby turned up with a weaker team than usual, thus giving us half a chance, and thanks to another fine win by Tony, we did in fact manage to draw the match. We now have 10 points and chances are we won't be relegated. The rest of the team, apart from me, scored the all important draws. Report by John Oliver.
Match Report 9th March Braunstone 2 travelled the long road to Melton without any great expectations, especially as we were not up to full strength. However, we did have John Robinson on top board, but once John was held to a draw, we were then up against it. But for a short while there was hope, after I scored what was only my 2nd win of the season and Tony drew. Unfortunately though, both Roy and Cyril were swept away and it was a 3rd successive 3 - 2 defeat. Report by John Oliver.
Match Reports March 8th 2011 The first team hosted Shepshed 1 on Tuesday night and came out winners by 3 - 2 in a close match where time trouble played a major part. First to finish was Mark, who went into an ending with two bishops and Rupert Bowley lost his way and Mark won in his typical grandmaster style. Mike sacrificied two pieces for a rook and pawn and attack which never really materialised and accepted the offer of a draw in a possibly worse position. The other three games went to the wire with little time on the clocks for each player. John agreed a draw in what looked a difficult position but with his opponent down to his last minute, then Jim had a winning position, a piece up against Dave Farrall but with less than a minute left took a perpetual check. That left Paul, a pawn down in a bishop and pawn ending which he played really well, blitzing to a drawn position. A tense and close finish. Report by Mike Salisbury.
